Description
Product Description Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture into the world of Western rock and roll, The Brian Jonestown Massacre have made some of the most exciting underground music in America since the sixties. Formed in 1990 in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is very much an amalgamation of that city's past and present musical forces. Featuring 5 new songs from the critically-acclaimed BJM, We Are the Radio will surely please fans and critics alike. Tee Pee. 2005. Amazon.com BJM may have named themselves after one of rock's iconoclast geniuses, but they always seemed to base their own retro sound on other retro acts from the 1980s "Paisley Underground" and "C86" scenes, not to mention the band Spacemen Three. From the start, they were as much a meta-band that mocked themselves and others for taking themselves too seriously, which had the effect of the band's music not being taken too seriously. Which is a shame (or was one until the release of the 2004 documentary Dig!) because BJM's mischievous, recombinant retro sounds have always been at least as great as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Dandy Warhols, and Beachwood Sparks. These five songs constitute a "mini album" rather than an EP, likely because a few are rather long. The tunes are all very strong. "God Is My Girlfriend" is a lot of fun in the way it mixes Byrds jangles, modal harmonies and spacey drum loops, while the Beatles-versus-Stones number "Never Become Emotionally Attached to Man, Woman, Beast or Child" is one of the band's best songs ever. --Mike McGonigal
