If you just have one item to cast, or just want to try out making a mold and casting a resin part, this is a nice kit. All the materials you need are provided, the directions are good, and it is pretty easy to use. I used the kit to cast a small part I wanted for a model I was building, and it worked out well. My only issue with this kit is that it is designed and intended for using the products all at once. The directions tell you to mix the entire bottle of catalyst with the entire container of Base to make the molding silicone. For my application, this would result in making considerably more silicone than I needed. And I would not have any silicone left for future use, and would have to buy more if I wanted to do another molding project. In looking at the directions I found that for larger kits, they called for a 10 to 1 ratio by weight of base to catalyst. Since I don't have a scale that would accurately weigh these products, I estimated that ratio based on volume to make my silicone. Maybe I was just lucky, as it worked out OK. And I still have enough base and catalyst to make some additional small molds in the future. But keep in mind that if you are thinking of buying this kit to make several molds and castings over time, it is not intended for that. It's basically a "one shot and done" kit.I'm not sure if this stuff has a shelf life or not, but the box the kit came in (not the shipping box) was pretty beat up and the mold making portion did not set. The catalyst had a brown precipitate that was very difficult to resuspend. Once mixed, I added it to the base as instructed and mixed very well. This did not harden at all even after 48 hours. The goop was extremely difficult to remove from the item I was trying to make a mold of. Huge waste of time. Also note, I have used other Alumilite products and they had foil sealed tops and this one did not.The silicon is liquid-great advantage to obtain a mold surface without bubble cavities. The silicon flexibility is a bit low-the mold can crack. The mold release of plastic master-model is good with appropriating spray, for resin master model or to separate two halves of silicon mold releaser should be more reliable. The casted resin is a bit flexible and hard. The adventage-all the bubbles are inside of the casting, do not destroy the surface. Disadvantage-short pot time (2 min) impossibile to work with syringe to cast with pressure.I took a simple broken plastic part that I needed to cast a replacement for. I was able to quickly make the mold and pour the rubber. Let it set over night. Mixed the plastic resin the next day and in no time had the part I needed. There was only enough rubber to make the one mold but enough resin to cast the part 6 times. You can check the Alumilite website for more information and volume calculations. But this did what it said and was exactly what I needed.I'm a longtime model builder, and sometimes I need to cast my own parts. I had one of these several years ago, and thought it wa a great starter kit. I was forced to stop building for awhile, and when it was time to start again, rather than buy individual parts and mixes I just ordered another starter kit. I haven't tried any other resin-casting products, but then I haven't needed to. This kit is just fine, and gets the job done for me.This product contains an extremely small quantity of the items needed for its price. Additionally, the 'Quik-set' silicon mold takes from 8 to 18 hours to set. Other mold materials take as little as 10 minutes. If you're trying to do a two part mold, that means 16 to 36 hours of mold drying time. Additionally, the instructions do not include the ability to make a two part mold. Mostly because it's add ALL of the 'A' part and the 'B' part, vice proper ratios. Unless you only ever desire to cast one thing, and a single mold at that, I would not recommend this product.Had to read the directions thoroughly but followed all the steps and it made a perfect casting. Just be sure you don't take it out before it's fully hardened- we let it sit a few extra just to be sure. This was my first time using Alumlite. It worked really well. I would recommend this product, but it truely is a mini kit. Could only make a small mold. A larger kit might have been better for the price. More is better. It was easy to work with and I will be getting more in the fututre.
